In the United States, approximately 700 women per year die from childbirth or within the year after (Center for Disease Control, 2020). Unfortunately, due to the disparities in health care, African American and minority women are disproportionately affected. The co-morbidities that lead to fatalities, such as hypertension, cardiomyopathy, and diabetes, are more prevalent in the African American community. Evidence shows that black women are two to three times more likely to die from pregnancy related causes than white women (2020).
